ON CHRISTMAS MORNING I WAS SOUND ASLEEP at my father’s when I felt someone crawl into the bed with me. I looked over at the clock and it was exactly five-thirty in the morning.

“Hey, Clarke? Clarke? You ‘sleep? Clarke?”

“Stacey, what are you doin’ up so early?”

“Have you forgotten? It’s Christmas.”

“Oh, yeah, wake me up in another two or three hours, so I can see what Santa brought you.”

She began to laugh. “Hey, Clarke? Clarke?”

“What is it, Stacey?”

“You still believe in Santa?”

“Yeah…Don’t you?”

“Girl, no. Ain’t no Santa Claus. Now get up so we can see what Thomas bought us. He and Byron are already up. I heard them sneaking out presents. They’re waiting on us to get up.”

I dug into the covers a bit more. “Good, let them wait about two or three more hours. C’mon, you can sleep in here with me.” I laid my head back into my pillow and Stacey lay down also. I couldn’t fall asleep because I could feel Stacey staring at me. “You’re excited, aren’t you?”

She whispered. “Yeah, sort of. Aren’t you?”

“Yeah, I guess,” I said. “C’mon.”
